Vanishing Point. Drop Zone. Fast and the Furious. Movies like these projected the Challenger, and it's high performance sibling the R/T into the mainstream culture. Because of low production numbers, these cars project a hefty price tag nowadays, and is truly any muscle car fanatic's dream to find one in a barn, field, or old lady's garage.
This car sealed its place in people's memories of what a Challenger Really was. The Go-Wing, Snorkel Hood, Stripes, and bold colors that shouted "Look at Me, I am something Special!" This was the emulation of passion that stirs the emotions of car enthusiasts, young and old.
The Challenger R/T had four engine choices in 1970: The 383-4v, 426-8v, and the two 440s, four barrel and six pack versions.
They were built at the Los Angeles and Hamtramck plants (no six pack or hemis were built at Los Angeles).
The Challenger R/Ts did not have the flat hood, only the Shaker and dual snorkel hood (depending on story, two or three came with the T/A hood, thanks to special ordering or shaker hood shortages).

*Out of the 875, 733 are auto (Thanks Red!), 440,426, JS27, closer to 151 (not sure...)
Another oddity worth mentioning are the 340 "R/Ts". The 340 was only availible in the four-barrel "performance package" (code A66), and the JH23J Trans Am (code A53) with the six pack engine. NOT R/Ts! Some of the A66 cars recieved R/T emblems at the factory.
